Lead Services

Lead-based paint is very common in homes built prior to 1978 and is one of the most common causes of lead poisoning. Lead paint is still present in older homes, sometimes under layers of newer paint. If the paint is in good shape, it’s not usually a problem; however, chipping or peeling paint can become a hazard. It is also a hazard if found on areas that receive a lot of wear and tear, or areas that children can chew, such as window sills, stair railings and banisters. Deteriorating lead-based paint in the home can also produce a lead-based dust. It is important to keep all paint in good shape and dust often. When painted surfaces are disturbed, such as in renovations, a toxic lead dust can be created. If you must sand, wet the area first, and clean up thoroughly.

Lead in soil is naturally-occurring, and can be found in high concentrations in some areas. In addition, past use of leaded gasoline, lead-based paints or former lead smelters have contaminated soils. Lead in soil can be tracked indoors or ingested by small children. It is a good idea to remove your shoes at the door and wash hands after playing or working outdoors.

Lead in water is also something to watch for. Lead solder is used in some water service lines and household plumbing materials. Lead can enter the water as it flows through the plumbing. If your home has lead pipes, you should consider testing your water for lead content and replacing lead-containing plumbing fixtures and fittings. In case you are unfamiliar with this material, lead is a dull gray metal that scratches easily.

Lead is also a common material used in hobbies and everyday work. Lead can be found in shot and fishing sinkers, as well as solder in stained glass and pottery glazes. Shooting ranges and many other places contain lead. Never put lead materials in your mouth. Avoid handling food or touching your mouth or face while engaged in working with lead. Make sure to shower and change clothes before entering your vehicle or coming home. Launder clothes exposed to lead separately from the rest of your family’s clothes and keep all lead materials away from living areas.

Our trained professionals at Environmental Services can provide professional lead testing and removal.

Bat Waste Cleanup

If you have had problems with bats, you are aware of the waste they leave behind. This is one of the biggest issues associated with bat infestations. Bat guano makes people sick when it collects in attics since it can harbor dangerous fungal spores, such as histoplasmosis, which can lead to tuberculosis-like symptoms. Environmental Services can remove bat waste quickly to improve indoor air quality and to prevent your family from becoming ill.
