About Asbestos

If there is any suspicion the materials used in, on, or around your home may contain this hazardous material, then you need to hire the trained and certified professionals at Environmental Services to complete an asbestos inspection. Exposure to breathing in asbestos fibers can increase chances of developing serious health conditions.

Asbestos consists of six naturally occurring silicate minerals used commercially for their desirable physical properties. Asbestos has been used in a number of building products for its tensile strength, resistance to fire, heat and electricity. Asbestos’s popularity began at the end of the 19th century and was widely used until 1980, when the extraction, manufacturing and processing of asbestos products was banned. Asbestos is a mineral fiber, and when in good condition and left undisturbed is not harmful. It is when these fibers are released into the air and breathed in, that they cause serious health problems such as lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis. Asbestos testing is very important if you suspect you are at risk.

Asbestos is Regulated

It is for these reasons that the EPA, OSHA, State and Local Agencies regulate how asbestos is to be handled. Asbestos must be removed in such a manner so as to release as few of the fibers as possible and must be disposed of in an asbestos approved landfill.

All buildings must be inspected by a licensed asbestos inspector prior to any demolition or renovation. Suspect materials are sampled and sent to a lab for testing. If asbestos is found, the asbestos must be removed according to state regulations and then re-inspected by a third party inspector. A signed statement by a state-certified asbestos inspector, stating that the building is free of asbestos, must be submitted to the state prior to any demolition.
